The Subaru FMOS Galaxy Redshift Survey ( FastSound ) . III . The mass - metallicity
نویسنده
چکیده
We present the results from a large near-infrared spectroscopic survey with Subaru/FMOS (FastSound) consisting of ∼ 4,000 galaxies at z ∼ 1.4 with significant Hα detection. We measure the gas-phase metallicity from the [N II]λ6583/Hα emission line ratio of the composite spectra in various stellar mass and star-formation rate bins. The resulting mass-metallicity relation generally agrees with previous studies obtained in a similar redshift range to that of our sample. No clear dependence of the mass-metallicity relation with star-formation rate is found. Our result at z ∼ 1.4 is roughly in agreement with the fundamental metallicity relation at z ∼ 0.1 with fiber aperture corrected star-formation rate. We detect significant [S II]λλ6716,6731 emission lines from the composite spectra. The electron density estimated from the [S II]λλ6716,6731 line ratio ranges from 10 – 500 cm, which generally agrees with that of local galaxies. On the other hand, the distribution of our sample on [N II]λ6583/Hα vs. [S II]λλ6716,6731/Hα is different from that found locally. We estimate the nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratio (N/O) from the N2S2 index, and find that the N/O in galaxies at z ∼ 1.4 is significantly higher than the local values at a fixed metallicity and stellar mass. The metallicity at z ∼ 1.4 recalculated with this N/O enhancement taken into account decreases by 0.1 – 0.2 dex. The resulting metallicity is lower than the local fundamental metallicity relation.

THE FMOS-COSMOS SURVEY OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES AT z ∼ 1.6. III. SURVEY DESIGN, PERFORMANCE, AND SAMPLE CHARACTERISTICS
We present a spectroscopic survey of galaxies in the COSMOS field using the Fiber Multi-Object Spectrograph (FMOS), a near-infrared instrument on the Subaru Telescope. Our survey is specifically designed to detect the Hα emission line that falls within the H-band (1.6-1.8 μm) spectroscopic window from star-forming galaxies with 1.4 < z < 1.7 and Mstellar & 10 10 M⊙. With the high multiplex capa...

We propose the first large-scale cosmological redshift survey of the z > 1 Universe using the newly commissioned FMOS wide-field spectrograph in order to test for predicted gravitational departures from General Relativity in the early Universe. Spectroscopic redshifts will be secured using the Hα emission line for 20,000 galaxies with 0.7 < z < 1.6 over 30 deg by the target selection method tha...
متن کاملThe Gemini Deep Deep Survey. Vii. the Redshift Evolution of the Mass-metallicity Relation
We have investigated the mass-metallicity (M-Z) relation using galaxies at 0.4 < z < 1.0 from the Gemini Deep Deep Survey (GDDS) and Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS). Deep K and z band photometry allowed us to measure stellar masses for 69 galaxies. From a subsample of 56 galaxies, for which metallicity of the interstellar medium is also measured, we identified a strong correlation between ...
متن کاملTHE FMOS-COSMOS SURVEY OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES AT z ∼ 1.6 II. THE MASS-METALLICITY RELATION AND THE DEPENDENCE ON STAR FORMATION RATE AND DUST EXTINCTION
We investigate the relationships between stellar mass, gas-phase oxygen abundance (metallicity), star formation rate, and dust content of star-forming galaxies at z∼1.6 using Subaru/FMOS spectroscopy in the COSMOS field. The mass-metallicity relation at z ∼ 1.6 is steeper than the relation observed in the local Universe. The steeper MZ relation at z ∼ 1.6 is mainly due to evolution in the stell...
متن کاملThe 6dF Galaxy Survey: a low-redshift benchmark for bulge-dominated galaxies
The 6dF Galaxy Survey provides a very large sample of galaxies with reliable measurements of Lick line indices and velocity dispersions. This sample can be used to explore the correlations between mass and stellar population parameters such as age, metallicity and [α/Fe]. Preliminary results from such an analysis are presented here, and show that age and metallicity are significantly anti-corre...
